Kenneth Rexroth Bestiario

Bestiario Kenneth Rexroth

Deer

Deer are gentle and graceful
And they have beautiful eyes.
They hurt no one but themselves,
The males, and only for love.
Men have invented several
Thousand ways of killing them.

Ciervo

Los ciervos son tiernos y elegantes
Y tienen ojos bellos.
No hieren a nadie sino a sí mismos,
Los machos, y sólo por amor.
Los hombres han inventado varias
Miles de formas de matarlos.

Lion

The lion is called the king
Of beasts. Nowadays there are
Almost as many lions
In cages as out of them.
If offered a crown, refuse.

León

El león es llamado el rey
De las bestias. Hoy en día hay
Casi tantos leones
En jaulas como fuera de ellas.
Si te ofrecen una corona, recházala.

Vulture

St. Thomas Aquinas thought
That vultures were lesbians
And fertilized by the wind.
If you seek the facts of life,
Papist intellectuals
Can be very misleading.

Buitre

Veo a mi padre
haciendo exactamente lo mismo,
silbando «Beautiful dreamer».
Su aliento penetrante
a whisky y tabaco. Y puedo
escucharlo mientras vuelve a casa borracho,
desde la Taberna del Alce en Elkhart,
Indiana, bamboleándose contra las sillas
en la oscuridad. Y puedo verlo

Proust's Madeleine

Somebody has given my
Baby daughter a box of
Old poker chips to play with.
Today she hands me one while
I am sitting with my tired
Brain at my desk. It is red.
On it is a picture of
An elk's head and the letters
B.P.O.E.—a chip from
A small town Elks' Club. I flip
It idly in the air and
Catch it and do a coin trick
To amuse my little girl.
Suddenly everything slips aside.
I see my father
Doing the very same thing,
Whistling ``Beautiful Dreamer,''
His breath smelling richly
Of whiskey and cigars. I can
Hear him coming home drunk
From the Elks' Club in Elkhart
Indiana, bumping the
Chairs in the dark. I can see
Him dying of cirrhosis
Of the liver and stomach
Ulcers and pneumonia,
Or, as he said on his deathbed, of
Crooked cards and straight whiskey,
Slow horses and fast women.
